Welcome to Canton Ohio Police Department D.A.R.E. Program's Web Site!
As the Canton Police Department D.A.R.E. Program has currently been suspended in the City of Canton, OH I would like to ask parents and guardians of children in this city to help carry on the work of D.A.R.E. Please remember, your children are the future of the world we live in. They need guidance and someone to talk to just like all of us did at one time. I still need this in my life. Please communicate with your children. Spend time with them. Love them, guide them along the path to becoming a true human being. Let them know about the world, and that it is ok to make mistakes, but how to respond and ask forgiveness for our mistakes. Help them to try to find who they really are, not what someone else necessarily wants them to be. Help them go after dreams. Listen to your children. I have learned so much from the children I have taught over the past 13 years in D.A.R.E. They are truly blessings to us all. Thank you for your support over the past 13 years on behalf of all of Canton City's past and present D.A.R.E. Officers. In understanding a little of what D.A.R.E. has taught you can see links to the curriculum from other pages on this web site. What most people don't know about D.A.R.E. is that it is a "life skills" program. The core curriculum in D.A.R.E., 5th or 6th grade, currently has 2 basic lessons out of 17 that teach about drugs, drug abuse, and the consequences of abusing drugs and not abusing drugs. So much more is taught, things I never learned as a child such as: peer pressure, ways to say no, responding assertively, managing stress without drugs, self-esteem, conflict management, risk taking and decision making, positive alternatives. D.A.R.E. can never be judged simply as a drug prevention program, that is a small part of the curriculum. D.A.R.E. is a "life skills" program that gives much information to students enrolled at all levels of the program. Children will sometimes tell police officers in their school what they will tell no one else. Just ask a D.A.R.E. Officer. In measuring the D.A.R.E. Program you can quote statistics from all over, latest article in Canton Newspaper The Repository stated drug use among teenagers has decreased. D.A.R.E. cannot simply be evaluated as a drug prevention program. Even if it were, we hear of the failures down the road, how would we measure the successes? This program offers students information to assist them in their life. Help carry on the message of D.A.R.E. within the City of Canton. Sincerely, Officer Steven E Silver
